A highly anticipated spring tradition continues when over 200,000 tulip bulbs blossom into a sea of colors just in time for this Mother’s Day celebration in Washington Park. Historic events take place annually, including the street scrubbing on State Street, the tradition of the Tulip Queen Coronation, Tulip Queen and Court Luncheon and Royal Tulip Ball. As always, Saturday and Sunday will host the added excitement of children’s activities, craft vendors, delicious food and multiple stages with nationally acclaimed musical performances.

Saturday afternoon features the crowning of the Albany Tulip Queen. Nominees go through a competitive interview process and five finalists are chosen to attend the ceremony. One will be crowned the Queen and the other four will serve as the Tulip Court. The Tulip Queen & Court spend their year of reign involved in volunteer projects, community functions, book drives and develop initiatives to further the Mayor's Literacy Campaign. Special ground rules in effect: Security personnel reserve the right to inspect any bag, container or package and confiscate any prohibited or illegal items. No glass containers of any kind, animals or pets (excluding ADA-defined service animals), or recording of performers or presentations. All attendees should be prepared to present age identification at any time if they intend to consume alcohol.

Tulip Court member Carly Brooks, 21, Albany NY
Carly is a Senior at University at Albany studying Criminal Justice & Political Science with a minor in Business. She’s worked locally at Unity House in Troy and local soup kitchens as well as relief work in New Orleans, Guatemala, Staten Island, Kentucky & North Carolina. She helped introduce & direct Community Connections, an intergenerational community service program in Glenville, NY. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and outdoor sports like tennis, soccer and hiking. Carly hopes to pursue a career in law, focusing on health care reform. As a member of the Tulip Court she wants to focus on youth outreach and juvenile delinquency prevention.

Tulip Court member Colleen Cavanaugh, 18, Watervliet NY
Colleen is a Freshman at the College of St Rose studying Chemistry Adolescent Education. She has been involved with many local & national organizations including The Elizabeth Nash Foundation, The Watervliet Senior Citizen Center, S.O.M.E. in Washington DC and Habitat for Humanity. Other than volunteering, Colleen plays piano, enjoys gardening and photography. Once her undergrad work is complete she hopes to obtain her masters degree in chemistry and teach high-school science. As a teacher she wants to encourage young women to pursue careers in math and science. As a member of the Tulip Court she wants to advance the Mayor’s literacy campaign & make a positive impact on the people they meet throughout their year of reign.

Tulip Queen Juliana Hernandez, 21, Loudonville NY
Juliana is a Senior at the College of St Rose focusing on Public Communications and Spanish. As the president of the communication honor society she organized Aids Walk, educational events and fundraised for Relay for Life. She has volunteered for the organization S.O.M.E., Habitat for Humanity, Esperanza (translating for missionaries in Costa Rica) and participated with the Intercultural Leadership Mentor Program at St. Rose. In her spare time Juliana plays guitar, sings, enjoys jogging, traveling & reading. She looks to obtain her Masters in Internal Affairs to work with a community outreach program with emphasis on immigration issues or as an international reporter using both English & Spanish languages. As a member of the Tulip Queen & Court she wants to work as a team on motivating children to develop confidence & a love for reading.

Tulip Court member Stephanie Herold, 18, Albany NY
A Senior at Bishop Maginn High School, Stephanie will attend Siena College in the fall as a liberal arts student. Her volunteer experience consists of helping at Summer Youth Basketball Camps, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, babysitting and participating in a student leadership workshop. She plays basketball & softball, enjoys reading, boating and also loves to swim. Once she completes her college education, Stephanie wants to enter the workforce and make a positive impact on society. As a member of the Tulip Court she would like to use the literacy campaign to help as many people as possible throughout their year of reign.

Tulip Court member Rosa Richburg, 19, Albany NY
A Freshman at Onondaga Community College, Rosa will be transferring to University at Albany this fall to pursue her degree in business. Rosa’s volunteer experience includes food pantry work with the Girl Scouts, Albany High School Black History Month Celebration and book drives. She loves to spend time with her friends & family, listening to music, baking and surfing the web. Rosa aspires to enter into the public relations field and contribute to a harmonious relationship between people & media. As a member of the Tulip Court she would like to successfully launch a new program for underprivileged children and get more young people involved in the community.
